Saskatchewan grows more wheat than any other province. At harvest time, the combine gathers the grain, and the grain elevator stores it until the train comes.

Saskatchewan produces more wheat than any other province. In 2025, Statistics Canada estimated its harvest at 18.2 million tonnes, out of a record Canadian total of 40.0 million: nearly half. Grain elevators receive, store and ship grain; an endless belt fitted with buckets lifts it into the bins. There were 5,758 of them in 1933, but many wooden elevators have since been replaced by large concrete terminals.
With your child, follow the wheat’s journey: field, combine, truck, elevator, train, then flour and bread. Remind them that farm machines are huge and that we always watch them from far away, with an adult.
