The boat pushes water aside, and water pushes it upwards. Its shape and material can help it float.

Did you know?

A paper boat may eventually sink as its paper soaks up water.

An idea to try

A little more to discover

An object floats when the upward force of water balances its weight. The paper boat is a concrete starting point; the scene does not compare different materials. Paper can absorb water, lose its shape and eventually sink. Avoid the false rule « everything heavy sinks ». A later step could compare the same amount of modelling clay shaped as a ball and a hollow hull.

With an adult, fold a paper boat and try it in a shallow tub. Predict what might change if the paper becomes very wet.
