Snowshoe Hare

The snowshoe hare hides among forest shrubs. Its long back legs help it leap, and its large feet are covered with fur, even underneath.

Scientific name: Lepus americanus. Where it lives: Forests and thickets across much of Canada. What it eats: Soft plants, then twigs and bark in winter. In some coastal regions, snowshoe hares keep a brown winter coat. Seasonal colour changes therefore vary with the population and its environment.
Look together: Are its front and back feet the same size? Draw the same hare on brown ground, then on snowy ground.
