The weaving loom

An adult prepares wide strips of paper. Your child weaves a strip over and under the others to make a small checkerboard pattern.

A loom crosses threads to make fabric. The threads arranged lengthwise are called the warp; the weft passes across them. These words describe two different roles in making cloth. The mechanism in the drawing is deliberately simplified so that children can notice the hands at work and the cloth already woven.
Connect this scene with the spinning wheel: making thread and making cloth are two different actions. Here, 'long ago' evokes a craft without giving an invention date or claiming it has disappeared. A few passes over and under are enough to introduce the idea of weaving.
