Inside Earth
Earth

Beneath Earth’s crust are the mantle and core. A cutaway model helps us picture these layers.
Did you know?
The outer core is liquid; the inner core is solid.
Look together
Find the model’s centre and its thin outer layer.
An idea to try
Choose four colours for the four visible layers in the model.

A little more to discover
The museum model represents the crust, mantle, outer core and inner core. The crust is very thin at Earth’s scale; its thickness is exaggerated here. The mantle is mostly solid rock that deforms slowly, not an ocean of magma. The cutaway is a model, not an actual opening in the planet.
Look together: Find the model’s centre and its thin outer layer. Choose four colours for the four visible layers in the model.
