The Paix des Braves was signed on February 7, 2002 between Québec and the Crees of Québec. The Cree Nation Government describes it as a new nation-to-nation partnership. It provides for funding of Cree economic and community development, an adapted forestry regime and mechanisms for dialogue. In its 2020 anniversary message, the Cree government emphasizes Cree consent and participation in development in Eeyou Istchee. This account distinguishes provisions of the agreement from the Cree Nation’s explanation of its significance; it does not mean that every decision about the territory follows the same process.
