A little more to discover
This last page is about the present, not a dated event. The 2021 Census counted 1.8 million Indigenous people and recorded more than 70 Indigenous languages; it also included more than 450 ethnic and cultural origins and 450 languages. Behind these numbers are family stories: arrivals and departures, languages kept or lost, traditions passed on.
Library and Archives Canada suggests starting with yourself and talking to the people around you, because Elders, neighbours and community members may have stories to share. Some memories are painful: let each person choose what to share, and help your child tell apart what they remember, what they were told and what they imagine.
